Build Your Own Simple Lens Camera and Explore Accelerated Lumens

Step into the world of DIY optics. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll build a working simple-lens camera from scratch, learning the core principles of image formation and exposure along the way. Artist and educator Brittonie Fletcher will cover how to adjust for sharpness and use “accelerated lumens” to dramatically boost your camera’s light performance.

Note: this event is in person in Somerville MA!

No prior experience required—just curiosity and a willingness to tinker. You’ll leave with a fully functional camera, explore optical fundamentals, and the ability to capture expressive images.

You’ll Learn:

  • How a simple lens forms an image

  • Basic camera construction techniques

  • Adjusting focal length for different effects

  • Estimating Exposure control for better results

  • The concept and application of accelerated lumens

Bring your hands, your eyes, and your questions. You’ll walk away seeing light—and cameras—in a whole new way.

Space is limited for this FREE event, so registration will be required.
Meeting location (reachable by public transit) and materials list will be sent to registrants.

Brittonie Fletcher is a Boston-born, Edinburgh-based visual artist and educator whose interdisciplinary practice in New Materialism and analogue photography has been widely exhibited and published.
