Festival-Adjacent Questions

Asked and answered!

  • We have three simple criteria for photos submitted to our call for entries: a camera is eligible if it:

    • shoots film (or exposes images directly onto photosensitive paper)

    • has a plastic lens (or no lens), and

    • offers extremely limited exposure control.

As long as your camera meets all three criteria, go for it! We want to see the photos you create with it!

  • Does it have a plastic lens? Does it have extremely limited exposure controls? Does it shoot film? If the answer to all three of those questions is YES, then YES it qualifies.

Just do a little research. We do know from past inquiries that…

    • the LC series cameras do NOT qualify

    • the Apparat does qualify

    • the Diana F+ qualifies with the plastic lens (better: hunt down an original Diana or Diana clone at a yard sale or thrift store!)

    • the Spinner 360 is a mystery (Lomo Corp is not forthcoming re: lens spec) but we have had Spinner photos in our shows in the past.

  • Yes, both homemade and commercially-produced pinhole cameras are eligible, whether they expose the image onto film or photosensitive paper.

  • No — the vast majority of models (hundreds?) Polaroid produced had glass lenses.

  • Nope. A past juror opened this door around 2017 or so by allowing photos made on a dslr with a holga lens, and since then we’ve left it up to our jurors whether to consider digital devices. This year, the organizing committee is recommitting to STCF being a film photo festival.

  • No, sorry. We don’t accept time-based media submissions. We’d list the reasons, but we’re already melting down at the mere thought of a film projector running in a gallery for 6 hours straight!

  • Absolutely! Our call for entries is open to anyone in the world!

  • No theme, we welcome photos of any subject matter for our gallery shows!

  • No need! Artists submit photos to our call, and our juror selects enough work to fill all our gallery walls. The organizing committee then meets to review the juror’s selections and decide which pieces will be in which gallery.

  • The opening receptions for our gallery shows are great opportunities to meet other artists and lo-fi photo enthusiasts. We also offer several workshops and other events throughout the Festival month, and we try to do a mix of online and in person. Watch our Festival Events page for updates as September approaches, and see our events archive to get a sense of past offerings.

  • We’re so glad you asked!

    1.   Submit your photos for our shows!

    2.   Beyond that, contact us. We have needs, you have skills/interests… let’s talk about where they overlap!
